Sorry for the lack of writing. I tend to not write when I get stressed out.. even though it should probably be the opposite since writing is a release. I’m just starting to get stressed over finals and my audition. I broke down crying today during my lesson, because I got all frustrated with myself. I just need to relax. Too bad it’s easier said than done. But however stressed I may be, I’m really happy. I love college, and I love my band. Speaking of my band, I never wrote about our show at the Ottobar on Monday the 25th. It was so great…
On the way to the show, Katie and I were all excited about playing at the Ottobar. I mean this is our favorite place to go see bands, and not only were we playing there, but we were playing with fairly big bands. So anyway.. I was waving around a CD visor thing and I accidently hit myself in the head with it.. and took a chunk of skin out of my forehead. I still have a mark from it. haha.. I am such a loser. (:
So we got there and brought our stuff in. I spent like 10 minutes practicing jumping off the monitors on the empty stage. Am I not the biggest nerd ever? So later while we were just waiting around a guy came in and introduced himself to us. He was like “Hi! I’m from Fairview!” Me and Katie gasped loudly, being the big nerds we are. haha.. the reason we wanted to play this show was because of Fairview. They’re really awesome. They were really nice too.. we talked to them and hung out most of the time at the merch table with Grace, their keyboard player. The other bands were really nice too. Especially Perry from Nerf Herder.
So we played around 8:00pm. We were all really nervous, but I think it went well. I wasn’t feeling it on the stage, but we had a big crowd which was very cool. The sound on stage was real crappy, but everybody said it sounded fine out in the crowd. When we watched the tape afterwards, it sounded better and we played pretty well. I unfortunately didn’t get to jump off of any of the monitors, because I realized if I stood on one of them, the audience would have a nice view up my skirt. Maybe I’ll figure out how to do it one day. (;
Afterwards we got a really good reaction. It’s such a great feeling to have people compliment your band and especially your playing. We were real nervous about being an opening band becuase local opening bands have a pretty bad rep. A lot of them aren’t really that good, so we really wanted to try and prove ourselves. It was awesome to hear from people that we were the bet opening band they’ve seen in a while, and some liked us better than some of the main acts. What’s even cooler is when bands that are way bigger than you are incredibly nice and say that your band is really good. Perry even said that once we get our demo done, he’ll try and hook us up with bands in California that we’d sound good with. Ahh! So cool! (:
Fairview played after us and they were incredible! I love their CD, but their live show was AMAZING. They were soo good, it sucks more people don’t know them. It was funny becuase I think we were the only people in the crowd who knew their songs. They dedicated two songs to us, and one of them was my favorite song “Chinese New Year.” Yay! I can’t wait until they come around again, I hope we get to play with them another time. Ultimate Fakebook was rockin’. I like their style - they remind me a whole lot of a little more punk rock Elvis Costello. Nerf Herder was headlining the tour and they were great! They were friggin’ hilarious. They spent the whole show complaining about their bad experience at the restaurant, Crabby Dicks, in Fells Point. At one point Perry pulled out a keyboard thing and dedicated “Welcome to My World” to us and Fairview since we had keyboards. It was a rockin’ show!
So after the show was over I got all the guys from Fairview to autograph my poster. (I’m a NERD) It was silly.. the lead singer, Bobby, took forever writing on mine. He was like “I have to sign it like a year book, it’s not like you’re a stranger!” So we finally left and went to dinner at the paper moon. 10 minutes later Nerf Herder and Fairview show up! It was crazy. They invited us to pull our table over but it was bolted to the ground haha. So they just came over and harassed us for our french fries. Later on they yelled over from their table, “Got anymore fries?” So we threw fries over at them… It was hilarious. Fries are flying everwhere and they’re sitting there trying to catch them in their mouths. They were particularly bad at catching them too. haha.. so much fun. (:
So, our first big show at the Ottobar was a blast. In the words of Drew from Velvet.. “That was BANGIN’!”
