The Postal Service
So lately I’ve been listening to The Postal Service a lot. Greg sent me a song of theirs and asked if I wanted to go to the concert with him a few weeks ago. I though the mp3 was pretty cool and agreed to go. I’m always down to go to a show.
I wasn’t very impressed with the openers, but The Postal Service blew me away. I was surprised to see Jenny Lewis from Rilo Kiley walking around. Turns out she was on tour with the PS, she sings and plays guitar. KG played with Rilo Kiley back in the day so everytime they’ve been around we’ve gone to see them. Anyway, I really dug The Postal Service. It’s like mellow/upbeat music, with electronic beats. I guess you could call it electronic emo, if you want to bastardize is. (: The singer, Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie) voice rules, it’s so smooth and relaxing, and Jenny’s backup vocals really compliment it. Jimmy Tamborello basically plays a mac computer live and controls the electronic stuff. It’s pretty sweet, although you don’t see much of him or Jenny because they have a video type thing going on in the background the whole time which keeps them in the dark. One of the coolest things was when Ben put down his guitar and played live drums with the music. Rock.
I picked up the CD, even though it broke my rule of hearing the CD before I buy it, becuase I liked them that much. The CD is just a as great. All the songs are good, but I’d recommend checking out track 1, “The District Sleeps Alone” or track 4, “Nothing Better.”
